ACTING AND MOVEMENT COACH

BEN PHILLIPS: ACTING AND MOVEMENT COACH

I initially trained at Ecole Phillipe Gaulier in London as well as the Hope Street Physical Theatre Programme in Liverpool. I have 16 years industry experience in performing, directing, and devising work.

I recently completed a two and a half year training at the Michael Chekhov International Academy in Berlin and am now one of the few qualified Chekhov teachers in the north of England. Chekhov’s psycho-physical training allows the actor to strengthen their creative imaginations.

The work is extremely effective and liberating in helping the actor to find a new depth to their work by developing a stronger relationship between the physical body and the imagination. It also provides accessible exercises which can be a crucial aid when preparation time is short. The Chekhov technique is also incredibly beneficial to non-actors looking to further develop their creativity.

“You have to teach yourself to act but Michael Chekhov will give you the necessary tools”

WORK WITH DRAMA SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES

I have taught acting and movement for the last 8 years across a range of HE institutions including Salford university, Hope University and at the Liverpool Institute For The Performing Arts.

Whilst at Lipa I worked with students on productions of Chekov’s Three Sisters, As you Like It and numerous devised projects. The 8 years I have spent teaching BA students combined with my industry experience has put me in an excellent position to understand how to work with students on bespoke projects. Work which I have found to be incredibly enriching for both myself and the students.

TESTIMONIALS FROM STUDENTS

“Ben's classes drew from a massively diverse knowledge of art forms to develop performance skills. His classes have a way of creating a sense of unity within the group, and give individuals a sense of release in performance. His classes were more than about physical performance technique but about understanding the complexities of human connection and how to recreate that with truth.”

Rhiannon Lewis

''I gained so much from my time being taught and directed by Ben. He truly believed in my potential to tackle a tricky bit of script and would always offer words of encouragement and room for me to push myself in a safe environment. Ben is a listener, who is passionate about his work and driven to facilitate positive change''.

AMBER BUTTERY

“Ben is a teacher I will never forget. Calm, collected, rigorous, witty. He instantly wins your respect and attention in your first moments of meeting him. You feel safe in his room, allowing you to flourish through whatever exercise he may throw your way. I still use many things from my classes with Ben in my daily practice.”
